New UN Resolution to Solve Humanitarian Crisis in Syria

Will this resolution finally end the human suffering in Syria?

The United States of America today welcomed the adoption of UNSC Resolution 2139 on humanitarian access in Syria.

Affirming that the human suffering continues to hunt the Middle East country, U.S. Permanent Representative to UN Samantha Power said the new resolution constitutes an important, unanimous demand by the Security Council that the barrel bombing and forced starvation of civilians in Syria has got to end.

Ms. Power said finally this resoultion will address the worst humanitarian crisis engulfing the nation for three years.

In addition, Ms. Power stressede that the new resulotion acknowledges that Council has unanimously committed to take additional action in the face of non-compliance.

The Security Council has spoken again for its call to end the suffering in Syria

Ms. Power underlined that the new unanimous resolution of the Security Council, paticularly identifies areas where sieges must be lifted including it demands the demilitarization of medical facilities, schools, and other civilian facilities; it demands cross-border humanitarian access so that aid can reach people in need through the most direct routes; it demands the cessation of insidious use of barrel bombs, which seem designed for the very purpose of terrorizing, maiming, and killing civilians.

“The Security Council has spoken; it is time now for long overdue action.” – Ms. Power

In addition, Ms. Power pointed out that a commitment is important there has been no “meaningful progress” implementing this Council’s previous presidential statement on humanitarian access.

The response of the action is ironic for the Assad regime responded to the Council’s guidance with intensified attacks on civilian targets instead. And, there were also increased blockades preventing the starving and the sick from accessing food and medicine.

Implementation is necessary

Ms. Power underscored that the passing of the resolution was the easy part. However, the hard part is the implementation.

She said the international community now needs to stand united on behalf of implementation so that there are no more broken promises, no more delays, no more coupling minor concessions with cruel and shameless attacks on civilians.

US aid to Syria

In November 2012, the United States of America provided $30 million in additional humanitarian assistance to respond to the needs of Syrian people affected by the turmoil.

In Syria, the additional funding will allow for provision of food aid to families in need.

In neighboring countries, the additional assistance from the United States will provide food supplies, hot meals, and food vouchers for families who have fled the violence in Syria.

In addition, the additional assistance will be provided through the World Food Program (WFP), which is providing food aid to 1.5 million people in Syria and the refugees who have fled to neighboring countries.

The United States is the largest donor of food aid for those affected by the conflict in Syria through WFP.

The Syrian violence has led a crisis on a humanitarian scale that is of the highest priority within the U.S. government, and for which the US pledges to continue to provide support.

In April 2012, with the deteriorating situation in Syria due to turmoil, the United States of America has bolstered efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to people affected by the conflict in the country.

The UN estimates that there are over 2 million Syrians inside Syria in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Of that number, it’s an estimated 300,000 internally displaced.

United States has dedicated some $33 million to support the important work to assist and protect those in need in Syria and neighboring countries, and much more is on the way.

The violence in Syria, which began in March 2011 as a protest movement similar to those witnessed across the Middle East and North Africa, has claimed over 70, 000 lives, mostly civilians, and displaced tens of thousands.
