IAEA Experts Set to Visit Iran

Experts from the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are set to visit Iran next week.

The visit aims to resolve outstanding issues related to the country’s nuclear programme.

Last November, IAEA released report that underscored again the danger posed by the Iranian nuclear program.

The nine-page report examines Iran’s compliance with the Non-Proliferation Treaty and binding UN Security Council resolutions that address Iran’s nuclear program.

The report highlighted that the IAEA is “increasingly concerned about the possible existence in Iran of past or current undisclosed nuclear-related activities involving military-related organizations, including activities related to the development of a nuclear payload for a missile, about which the Agency continues to receive new information.”

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano announced tha the upcoming visit will take place from 29 to 31 January.

The team will be led by the Deputy Director General for Safeguards, Herman Nackaerts, and will include the Assistant Director General for Policy, Rafael Grossi.

Mr. Amano stressed that the Agency team is going to Iran in a constructive spirit and they trust that Iran will work with them in that same spirit.

The United States has taken a series of actions to confront the threat posed by Iran and significantly increase pressure on Iran to comply with the full range of its international obligations and to address the international community’s longstanding concerns regarding its nuclear program.

The sanctions include: expanding sanctions to target the supply of goods, services, technology, or support (above certain monetary thresholds) to Iran for the development of its petroleum resources and maintenance or expansion of its petrochemical industry; designating eleven individuals and entities under Executive Order 13382 for their role in Iran’s WMD program; and identifying the Islamic Republic of Iran as a jurisdiction of “primary money laundering concern” under section 311 of the USA PATRIOT Act.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is an international organization that seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy. The agency seek to inhibit use of nuclear energy for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons. The IAEA was established as an autonomous organization on 29 July 1957.
