Citizens of Armenia Celebrate Their Independence Day

The citizens of Armenia today celebrated their 20th anniversary of independence.

Armenia is a former republic of the Soviet Union. It is a unitary, multiparty, democratic nation-state with an ancient and historic cultural heritage. It became the first state to adopt Christianity as its religion in the early years of the 4th century, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Armenia.

Ms. Clinton stressed that the United States values its relationship with Armenia, rooted in mutual respect and interests. She said both countries are working to reduce poverty, expand trade and investment, promote the work of civil society groups and broaden access to healthcare. She added as they celebrate the bonds between the two countries and honor Armenia’s rich cultural heritage, the U.S. government reaffirms the commitment of the United States to strengthen the cooperation between our two countries.

“Whether you celebrate with family, friends or loved ones, know that the United States is a partner and friend. Congratulations and best wishes to all Armenians around the world for a peaceful and prosperous year to come.” -Ms. Clinton

Armenia maintains good relations with almost every country in the world except Turkey and Azerbaijan. Reports say tensions were running high between Armenians and Azerbaijanis during the final years of the Soviet Union.
