Azerbaijan’s Iran Problem

Azerbaijan and Iran share a tense and dangerous relationship.

The tension comes from regional rivalry, ethnic pressure, energy routes and Baku’s close military and energy ties with Israel.

That friction briefly threatened to open another front in the wider Middle East war when Azerbaijan accused Iran of launching drones into its Nakhchivan exclave on March 5, 2026. The strike injured civilians and damaged infrastructure, according to Azerbaijani officials.

Iran denied responsibility.

But the incident exposed the deeper problem.

Azerbaijan’s Iran problem is no longer quiet, local or theoretical.

What Drives Azerbaijan’s Iran Problem

Tehran views Azerbaijan’s deep security, intelligence and energy ties with Israel as a direct threat on its northern border.

Furthermore, within its northern provinces, Iran contains a large ethnic Azerbaijani population causing historical sensitivity in Tehran regarding cross-border nationalism or separatism.

The control over regional transit corridors and energy infrastructure in the South Caucasus regularly places the two nations at odds.

Iran’s Tentacles in Azerbaijan

On March 7, 2026, Reuters reported Azerbaijan’s claim that it foiled IRGC-linked terror plots targeting, among others, the Israeli Embassy in Baku and Jewish sites.

Due to its close ties with Israel, which include arms sales and energy supplies, Azerbaijan is a favorite target for hostile Iranian activity.

The targets included the strategic Baku–Tbilisi–Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, Israel’s embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan, a leader of the Jewish religious community and the Ashkenazi synagogue in Baku.

A Media War Between Baku and Tehran

In direct response to Tehran’s decision to add Azerbaijan’s state channel to the list of terrorist and hostile media organizations, on Monday, July 27, 2026, the Republic of Azerbaijan’s government announced a total ban on the activities of the ‘Sakhar’ channel and the ‘Mehr’ media agency in its territory.

According to the Azerbaijani government’s statement, the ban applies to the TV channel ‘Sakhar’ and the news agency ‘Mehr,’ and also includes a ban on the presence in the country of representatives from these media outlets.

Baku’s Communications Development Agency stated that the Iranian media organizations “are conducting propaganda against the sovereignty of the state, against the constitutional order, territorial integrity, and national security.”

The decision comes against the backdrop of prolonged diplomatic and regional tension, following international reports about strategic and security connections in the area.

CNN Reports Israeli Operations From Azerbaijan

In June 2026, CNN reported that while the conflict with Iran continues, as part of a network of secret sites that are meant to facilitate and make it easier to operate against Iran, Israel has secretly deployed elite units in Azerbaijan.

According to the report, which broke the silence around regional cooperation, Special Forces operated from several points in southern Azerbaijan – near Iran’s northern border and only about 96 kilometers from the city of Tabriz*. Sources noted that commando units were deployed in the area and carried out intelligence-gathering and drone operations, giving Israel a crucial observation point deep inside Iranian territory during the confrontation.

*Tabriz is a historic city in northwestern Iran, the capital of East Azerbaijan Province and is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,367 meters (4,485 feet) above sea level, known for its rich cultural heritage, significant historical landmarks, and vibrant bazaars.

Nakhchivan Strike Raises The Stakes

According to Azerbaijan’s report, on March 5, 2026, drones were launched from Iran that struck Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, injuring civilian residents and damaging infrastructure. This prompted official protest and a demand for explanation.

Energy Security and The South Caucasus

Iran refuted the incident and any culpability. External actors were the culprits Iran claimed. Furthermore, threats of attacks on the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline, when Iran is considered to be the main potential aggressor, create an urgent danger to the stability of the region, the transport of energy and the balance of power in the South Caucasus.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev condemned the incident as an “act of terror,” prompting a temporary closure of borders and a sharp diplomatic pullback.

Iran Is No Ordinary Neighbor

Seeking to avoid a disastrous second front, on March 8, 2026, the presidents of both nations held a direct phone call, leading to a rapid de-escalation, the reopening of borders, and the exchange of humanitarian aid.

These developments create complications for Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia and European energy security especially amid the ongoing political tensions involving Iran, Israel, and the United States.

The United States has designated Iran as a State Sponsor of Terrorism since 1984.

That fact gives Azerbaijan’s Iran problem wider meaning.

Baku is not simply managing a difficult neighbor. It is dealing with a revolutionary regime accused of sponsoring terrorism, threatening Israel, intimidating regional states and destabilizing energy routes.

Azerbaijan’s Iran problem is therefore not a border dispute alone.

It is part of a wider struggle over terrorism, energy security, Israel’s survival and the future balance of power in the South Caucasus.
