Iraqi Armed Forces Deliberately Hit Three Liberty Residents

In a brazen violation of agreements with the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG) – Martin Kobler’s March 16, 2012 letter, in a provocative and utterly anti-humane act, at 10 AM on Wednesday, April 25, an Iraqi armed forces vehicle, in its way inside residential section 4, hit three Liberty residents.

As a result, three members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, Mehdi Kamali, Morteza Qare-Ughlan, and Hamzeh Qaderi were injured.

The Iraqi vehicle had entered the residential section unlawfully with a crane to remove the T-walls that are protective shields of the residential quarters against explosions and mortar attacks. The residents protested against the operation.

According to the UN SRSG’s letter of March 16, police patrols should only be along the main road of the camp and its number will be agreed upon in the daily management meetings.

In protest to this aggression, one of the residents, Mr Morteza Qare-Ughlan, laid down on the ground to stop the police vehicle. At the same time, UNAMI monitors arrived and mediated.

This incident clearly indicates the presence of Iraqi armed forces, equipped with machine-guns, and their patrolling, which on many days reaches 50 every 24 hours, is a source of constant tension and crisis, preparing the ground for clashes and killing.
