The citizens of Singapore today celebrated their National Day.
US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Singapore on their National Day.
Ms. Clinton highlighted that the United States values its close partnership with Singapore. She said their shared interests have led to regional and global cooperation on a range of security and economic issues and we look forward to continuing to look for ways to partner together in the years to come.
Both countries have joined together to combat terrorism in the region and throughout the world, reduced piracy in the Gulf of Aden, and increased our two-way trade. Ms. Clinton pointed out that those are just a few of their joint efforts that improve the security and prosperity of both our countries.
Singapore has a highly developed market-based economy. Along with Hong Kong, South Korea and Republic of China (Taiwan), Singapore is one of the Four Asian Tigers. The economy depends heavily on exports and refining imported goods.
“As you celebrate this special day with family and friends, I send my deepest congratulations to all Singaporean people everywhere for continued peace and prosperity in the year to come.” -Ms. Clinton
