New Zealand Celebrates The Festive ‘Waitangi Day’

The citizens of New Zealand today comemorated the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of New Zealand as they celebrate Waitangi Day.”

“This is a time to reflect on New Zealand’s rich history and promising future.” -Ms. Clinton

The United States and New Zealand share a vibrant partnership, shaped by the Wellington Declaration and years of friendship and cooperation.

Ms. Clinton states that the United States looks forward to continuing to deepen their relationship in the coming year as they work together promoting peace and stability, protecting the fragile Pacific environment, expanding economic opportunity, and standing up for global human rights.

Ms. Clinton stressed that the United States stands by New Zealand as it continue to face the challenges brought by earthquakes in the Canterbury region.

She commended the citizens of New Zealand for their resilience and strength have set an example for the world.

“As you observe this special day in New Zealand and in places around the world, I wish all New Zealanders a happy Waitangi Day, and a year filled with peace and prosperity.” -Ms. Clinton

Waitangi Day commemorates a significant day in the history of New Zealand. It is a public holiday held each year on 6th February to celebrate the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, New Zealand’s founding document in 1840.

At dawn on Waitangi Day, the Royal New Zealand Navy raises the New Zealand Flag, Union Flag and White Ensign on the flagstaff in the treaty grounds. The ceremonies during the day include a church service and cultural displays such as dance and song. The day closes with the flags being lowered by the Navy in a traditional ceremony.
