Somali Interim Government Postpones National Elections Until 2012

Somali interim government has decided to postpone national elections until 2012.

At a recent meeting, adviser of Premier Farmajo said that Somali TFG will hold elections during 2011. However, Abdirahman Omar Osman said it would be very complicated to get a kind of representative members of MPs that is accountable to its population.

“The Islamist opposition group were battling the Somali government since 2007 to set up an Islamic state on the Horn of Africa. The Somali government maintains its foothold in Mogadishu city with support from AU forces, Somali TFG and AU-peacekeeping. They are using local forces trained by AU who recently pushed out on the offensive, claiming achievements in Mogadishu as well in the Gedo province along with the Ethiopian and Kenyan border,” said Abdirahman Omar Osman.

On 3rd of February, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan drew international condemnation when the parliament voted to extend its mandate for another three years as the speaker has defended the extensions.

The conflict between Somali president, Sheikh Sharif Sh. Ahmed and parliament speaker, Sharif Hassan Sheikh Adan remains unsolved It is reported to be getting worse. Somalia has no functioning central government since the Siad Barre regime in 1991.
