Peaceful Demonstration Supports Somali TFG Refusal to Boycott UN Meeting

A peaceful demonstration was held today to show support for the Somali transitional federal government’s refusal to attend the United Nations-sponsored consultative meeting.

The demonstration occurred in some parts of central and southern Somalia according to residents in Gedi.

Hundreds of people including politicians, elders, educators, women and youth have marched the streets to show their support for the historical decision reached by the Somali government to reject the UN invitation for a consultative meeting.

In Belet-Hawo district, Mohamud Sayid Adan, spoke to the protesters, confirming that the populations in Gedo province are required to strengthen and support Somali government’s remarkable decisions.

Likewise, the officials of modern Islamists (Ahlu Sunna-walajame’a) joined the hundreds of demonstrators in parts of Galgudud region.

“Ahlu Sunna Waljama wasn’t invited to take part the forthcoming UN arranged consultative meeting on Somalia which will be held in Kenya mid of April, 2011,” said Sheikh Bile Bashir, a spokesperson for Somalia’s moderate Islamists (Ahlu Sunna Waljama).

The Somali government refused to attend the UN meeting to tackle Somali issues. The Somali diasporas also boycotted attending the UN sponsored consultative meeting in Kenya.
