Citizens of Suriname Celebrate Their Independence Day

Citizens of Suriname today celebrated the 36th anniversary of their independence.

Suriname was a former colony of the British and of the Dutch. The country was previously known as Dutch Guiana. Suriname achieved independence from the Netherlands on 25th November 1975, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Suriname.

She noted that Suriname is a valued partner as both countries work to advance key priorities for both countries. She highlighted that tTogether, they are promoting democracy and standing up for human rights. She added U.S.-Suriname partnership through the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative is enhancing the security and prosperity of the region. She said youth empowerment initiatives, both countries are building a stronger and brighter future for all our people.

“As you gather to enjoy festivals and celebrate your rich history, I wish all Surinamese a peaceful holiday celebration and a prosperous year.” -Ms. Clinton

The economy of Suriname is dominated by the bauxite industry. Suriname’s other main export products include rice, tuna, coconuts, bananas and shrimp. Suriname has started to exploit some of its sizeable oil and gold reserves.
