The USS Enterprise is joining Disney’s The Lone Ranger, Iron Man 3, and Thor 2, as Star Trek 2 is engaged to be released in 3D on May 17, 2013, according to Paramount Pictures.
The sequel’s planned release date, June 29, 2012, has been taken by G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation with Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
J. J. Abrams will return to direct and co-write the sequel to the 2009 blockbuster reboot of the 45-year-old franchise that went warp speed at the box office with $385 million dollars worldwide – winning an Oscar for Best Makeup, a first in the history of Trek.
Set to return are Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, John Cho as Sulu, Karl Urban as Bones, Anton Yelchin as Chekov, and Simon Pegg as Scotty.
Abrams has told the media that Oscar winner Benicio Del Toro is currently in talks to be the main villain of Star Trek 2, which is set to start filming on January 15, 2012.
