This African Cup of Nations has been a very dramatic and exciting one with many shock results, controversy and headline grabbing games.
It all began when Togo were forced to withdraw from the competition after their team bus was attacked by rebels who ambushed the players and coaches with a barrage of machine gun bullets. Three died and more were injured in the clash and as a result Togo withdrew.
The hosts, Angola, began the competition with a game against Mali. They were 4-0 up and looked incredibly strong but, with just over ten minutes to go, they managed to throw away their 4-0 lead as Mali came back at them to stage an extraordinary comeback; drawing 4-4. This was followed by more shock results as the tournament’s big teams failed to impress, Algeria lost 3-0 to Malawi, Ivory Coast drew their first game whilst Cameroon lost 1-0 to Gabon.
Nigeria, Algeria, Ghana and Egypt all went through to the Semi’s with the latter two making their way onto the Final. Yesterday Nigeria beat Algeria in the third placed playoff game, as a 1- 0 victory was enough to earn the Nigerians the bronze medal.
Today was the Final between Egypt and Ghana. The young boys of Ghana have played beyond expectations whilst Egypt have been amazing, winning every one of their games and looking unstoppable all the way though.
Egypt did what was expected of them today and they won the Final 1-0. They left it late though, waiting until the final five minutes when a sweet one-two was completed by Geddo who finished well to gift Egypt their third CAN in a row.
