Zohran Mamdani and The Genocide Word
One opinion piece rarely changes a nation.
But one argument can change one voter. One voter can influence another. In time, one idea can change millions of minds.
That is why America should pay attention to Zohran Mamdani.
Zohran Mamdani, who was sworn in as mayor of New York City on January 1, 2026, now governs the most capitalist city in America while preaching democratic socialism.
That contradiction deserves scrutiny.
Mamdani Comes From Privilege, Yet Preaches Socialism
Zohran Mamdani did not rise from poverty.
He is the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani. He attended the Bronx High School of Science and Bowdoin College before entering New York politics.
That does not disqualify him from politics.
But it does expose a familiar pattern.
Many socialist leaders come from comfort. Then they tell working people that more government control will make life fairer, cheaper and more humane.
Mamdani’s political platform included rent freezes, free buses, city-owned grocery stores, 200,000 affordable housing units and higher taxes on corporations and top earners.
That is not moderation.
That is government expansion, wrapped in affordability language.
Venezuela Shows The Socialist Warning
Venezuela should stand as a warning, but will it?
Before Hugo Chávez took power in 1999, Venezuela already had serious problems. It depended heavily on oil. It had corruption, inequality and political instability.
But under Chávez and Nicolás Maduro, socialist-populist policies expanded state control, weakened private enterprise, damaged institutions and helped drive economic collapse.
The result was devastating.
UNHCR says almost 7.9 million people left Venezuela in search of protection and a better life. It remains one of the largest displacement crises in the modern Americas.
Socialism did not create every Venezuelan problem.
But it helped turn a troubled country into a humanitarian catastrophe.
That lesson should not be ignored in New York.
100 Years of Communism and The Dead
One hundred years ago, the Bolshevik Revolution launched the world’s first communist state.
Many others followed.
Communist regimes promised equality. They promised justice. They promised liberation from capitalist exploitation.
They delivered repression, famine, labor camps and mass death.
The authors of The Black Book of Communism estimated the cumulative death toll under communist rule at between 85 million and 100 million people. That figure is debated, but the scale of communist violence is not.
The Soviet Union, China, Cambodia, North Korea, Vietnam and other communist states left behind a trail of graves.
Every generation should remember that history before trusting politicians who sell state power as compassion.
China’s Communist Death Toll
China shows the danger at terrible scale.
Under Mao Zedong, China’s communist revolution produced famine, persecution, labor camps and political violence.
The Great Leap Forward stands as one of the worst man-made catastrophes in modern history. The Black Book of Communism placed the death toll from the Great Leap Forward between 20 million and 43 million people.
Other estimates vary.
But no honest observer can deny the broad truth.
Communist utopian planning killed tens of millions of Chinese people.
Mamdani and Netanyahu
Mamdani now uses the word genocide against Israel.
He described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a war criminal and said Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City. He also urged the federal government to enforce the International Criminal Court warrant against Netanyahu, while admitting New York City lacks the legal authority to do so.
That is a serious charge from the mayor of America’s largest city.
The ICC issued warrants for Netanyahu and former Israeli defense minister Yoav Gallant over alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza. Israel denies the allegations.
Mamdani’s rhetoric ignores the origin of the war. The truth doesn’t fit his narrative.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attackers invaded Israel, killed about 1,200 people and took roughly 250 hostages. The United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry said the attacks were led and coordinated by Hamas and carried out with other Palestinian armed groups.
That was not resistance.
That was barbarism.
Netanyahu did not begin that war. Hamas did.
Israel’s campaign in Gaza remains bitterly disputed. Civilian casualties, military necessity and international law are proper subjects for debate.
But debate requires honesty.
Calling Israel’s war against Hamas genocide while ignoring Hamas’ declared goal of destroying Israel turns morality upside down.
Iran Shows Real Islamist Violence
If Mamdani wants to speak about mass murder in the Middle East, he should look at Iran.
The Islamic Republic has brutalized its own people for decades.
Human Rights Watch said Iranian security forces carried out mass killings of protesters after nationwide protests escalated on January 8, 2026. It said thousands of protesters and bystanders were believed to have been killed, while severe communications restrictions concealed the full scale of the atrocities.
Those victims were mostly Muslims.
They were killed by an Islamist regime.
That is the reality Mamdani and his allies rarely confront with the same passion they reserve for Israel.
America Must Choose Carefully
Zohran Mamdani is a Muslim democratic socialist leading America’s most important city.
That fact alone does not make him dangerous.
But his ideology, rhetoric and selective outrage deserve serious scrutiny.
He sells socialism from privilege. He condemns Israel with the language of genocide. He attacks Netanyahu while minimizing the ideology and violence of Israel’s enemies.
America should not follow that path.
Socialism already produced too many graves. Islamism already produced too much bloodshed. Antisemitism already produced too many warnings that the West ignored until it was too late.
New York is not Caracas.
America is not the Soviet Union.
But nations do not lose themselves overnight.
They lose themselves one idea at a time.
