Loving Healing Press Donating Books to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit in NH

Pursuing their mission of helping in healing and recovery by the written word, the Loving Healing Press (LHP) of An Arbor, MI, is donating copies of two of its children’s titles to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Franklin Pierce University in West Lebanon, New Hampshire.

The donation follows a call for books needed at the NICU for children under treatment and their families staying for caregiving and support. Reading helpful, empowering stories become a key part of the family experience in such facilities.

“Reading to babies reduced moms’ rates of postpartum depression and stress, improved their perceived ability to bond with their children, and increased the infants’ blood-oxygen saturation during reading sessions and in the 30 minutes after,” says Noelle Nunes, Clinical Program Coordinator at Franklin Pierce University.

Ms. Nunes tells that they have a goal to collect 300 books for use in the NICU and Children’s Hospital. This is where LHP stepped forward to help by donating 35 copies of Jewel Kats’ Prince Preemie and 15 copies of Laurie Zelinger’s Please Explain Anxiety to Me.

With Prince Preemie’s charming illustrations of the story of a royal dog family, children will learn important lessons about a premature baby being born to their own family and what to expect. We expect this book to be a staple for families explaining the ongoing situation to the baby’s siblings while staying at the NICCU, says Victor R. Volkman, Publisher at LHPress.

Titles Selected for Donation

Prince Preemie by Jewel Kats tells the story of a royal dog family that gets the news of their new puppy prince arriving early and thus calling for special arrangements. The book educates children on premature birth and families preparing for it. The book is adorned with unique woolen illustrations by Claudia Marie Lenart and is meant for children 4 – 8 years old.

Laurie Zelinger’s Please Explain Anxiety to Me, co-authored by Jordan Zelinger and illustrated by Elisa Sabella, does just what the title says-translate anxiety from the jargon of psychology into concrete experiences that children can relate to. The book provides young readers with strategies and ideas to help them change their anxiety responses.
