Last year’s winner was Liron Bar – Peled. His winning entry was his novel research into how mammalian cell size is influenced by its environment.

Bar-Peled’s essay describes multicellular organisms relying on environmental cues to dictate the size of their cells. “When nutrients are plentiful, cells engage key programs to increase their size and mass,” he writes.

This research is important because is is related to mutation of several human diseases, including a primary immune disorder, glioblastoma, and ovarian cancers.

Bar-Peled and his team are working to gain a better molecular understanding of these diseases and develop new ways to diagnose and treat them.
