Assam Flood Situation Worsens, 30,000+ People Affected
Guwahati: As incessant rains continue to lash Assam and the neighbouring states of Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya, the flood situation worsened Thursday. More than 30,000 people were affected by the floods in Assam.
State government data shows that more than 30,000 people in 15 districts were directly affected by flooding.
The Brahmaputra river and its tributaries had submerged a total of 10,844.37 hectares of crops in 15 districts. The districts are: Barpeta, Sonitpur, Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Darrang, Nalbari, Goalpara, Jorhat, Kamrup(Metro), Baska, Dibrugarh, Kamrup, Nagaon and Bongaigaon. The worst of the flooding was seen in Barpeta.
Some areas of Kaziranga National Park (KNP) are also flooded.
The Central Water Commission (CWC) called for evacuations in Jorhat and Dhubri after the Brahmaputra river water level exceeded the danger level mark.
The Brahmaputra’s danger level was also exceeded in Guwahati. Flood victims are being sheltered in several relief camps at more elevated areas.
