Seven Assamese Women Killed in Nepal Quake

At least seven women from Assam died in Nepal when the recent massive earthquake rocked the Himalayan region Saturday.

All seven women were on pilgrimage from Guwahati.

The women were identified as Hemaprabha Saikia, Bhanita Deka, Joyshree Bora, Bhumika Das, Rima Das, Kalpana Adhikary and Padmawati Mazumdar. On Tuesday, their bodies were brought home to Guwahati.

Officials said 30 other people returned to Guwahati from Delhi.

According to Assam government officials on Tuesday, 72 Assamese people known to have been in Nepal have not been located. This number increased from Sunday when Assam’s state disaster management department said they had not contacted 65 people out of 90 residents known to have been in Nepal.

“We have so far confirmed that at least 90 people of different parts of the state had gone to the Himalayan region. After massive earthquake we had been able to contact 19 people who had already returned to Delhi from Kathmandu today and they will leave to Guwahati on April 27,” a top State disaster management department official said.

The government opened helpline numbers for stranded people in Nepal to make contact.

The state disaster management department provided 1070, Assam police special branch provided two helpline numbers, 09435552203, and 08749860803.

The Namaste Community Foundation is collecting donations to help people affected by the earthquake. They said:
