Somalia: Je Suis Charlie – Synonymous With Protest
A large crowd of young protestors, mostly students, were seen in the streets of Mogadishu with black and white printed posters meaning “I am Muslim and I love my prophet.”
Their voices uttering the same slogans to show solidarity in their native language could have been heard as well.
The protest was organized by Mogadishu University against Charlie Hebdo’s reborn Magazine front cover few days ago which portrays a crying prophet Muhammad, seen as an insult by muslims around the world and news of the image has angered them.
Muslims have understood that any image of Prophet Muhammad is an attack on their religion following what happened in Paris the previous week. Many people were shocked by the terror attacks on the satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.
French authorities have warned the nation against linking French Muslims with terrorists.
“The terrorists’ religion is not Islam, which they are betraying,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said last week. “It’s barbarity.”
Muslims have fallen under suspicion after the attacks, despite a unity march on Sunday said to be the largest in French history in which crowds of Muslims participated.
“The world is ending and you can see the signs,” an old woman said, standing nearby the crowd movements.
