NESO Demands Security for NE Students

Guwahati, May 30: The North East Students Organisation (NESO) has demanded a special law to ensure safety and security of the students of the North East Indian region studying in various parts of the country.

Addressing a press conference held in Guwahati on Wednesday, the chairman of the students organization, Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharya urged to the union government and the concerned state governments to adopt a mechanism for ensuring safety and security of the NE students.

Recently two students of the region, Loitam Richard and Dana Sangma died in such suspicious conditions and NESO and other organisations demanded to proper inquiry over the case.

“Over a thousand students were going outside in every year for their higher studies and we looked into the issue as the lack of facilities, infrastructure in the education sector in the region. So we demanded to the state governments of the region and the union government to constitute a special education commission for the region,” Dr Bhattacharya said.

The NESO also raised their voice over the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) and illegal migrant’s issue.

“We will continue our movement against the AFSPA,” he added.

“The union government failed to implementation the Assam Accord, Manipur Accord. Every month, thousands of illegal Bangladeshi people entered in the region and their names also entered in the voter list, but the governments could not take any necessary action on the issue,” NESO said.

“In Meghalaya, large scale of illegal Bangladeshis in the recent voter list and it had raised threat to the indigenous people,” The Khasi Students’ Union and Garo Students’ Union said.

The students organization has urged the union government to look into the issue of stapled visa issued by the Chinese government.

On the employment policy, NESO demanded for 100% job reservation in the group C & D category for the unemployed youths of the region.

Meanwhile, NESO and Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF) had demanded a CBI inquiry as two students were allegedly killed on March 25, 2012.

NESO also demanded to halt the construction of big dams in the region and announced a series of their movement protest against the various issues, which will be started from June 7.
