Count Roccola to the Rescue: Sweet Wines for Halloween.

Boooooooooooooo, …….. OK, enough of the dramatics, lets get down to business! So you’re planning to have this sensational yet sophisticated, semi scary, sorta sexy, seasonal social soiree for Halloween and of course you need to find the perfect wine for the one day of the year when Susie in accounting isn’t the sweetest thing in the room.

Hey, there’s going to be all sorts of calorie crowded, cavity creating, canine corrupting cupcakes, candy corn and chocolate, chocolate, chocolate up the ying-yang!

Aha, but that’s where “Count Roccola” comes to your rescue! Here’s what you need to keep those sugar coated taste buds awake and capable of actually tasting and enjoying wines that will directly heighten the enjoyment of sweets on this most “unholy of nights,” according to my friend, Dentist

Dan, who smilingly counts on Halloween to make his next 12 Porsche payments for the year!

A Late Harvest Riesling: OK, the higher priced German Rieslings are absolutely “To Die For,” so maybe you want to spurge on this holiday for the dead, but the California made Rieslings, especially those coming to us from the “Golden Coast Region” are by far the best deal. A Late Harvest Riesling is a sassy, seductive, succulently sweet, yet deeply complex white wine. It is absolutely amazing as a dessert wine, with its natural fruity and floral fragrance and flavors.

A Moderately Priced Merlot: This sensuously soft and cooperatively compliant red has come to be renowned, revered and respected as a delightfully delicious wine in its own right. Not quite as intense or aggressive as most other reds, Merlot exudes a sophisticated and well balanced flavor, mellow yet still complex, often with the soft lingering flavors of plums, raisins and dates. Perhaps, with luck, your date for the evening will softly linger with this flavor as well.

Cabernet Sauvignon: One of the most well know, beloved and popular red wines amongst true aficionados and absolute newbies alike, the Cabernet’s amazing depth of complexity and richness of character is utterly flush with the fragrance and flavors of rich black currant, a hint of cinnamon and exploding with the taste of fresh blackberries. It gets extremely cozy and intimate with rich milk and rich chocolates. With this Cab on hand, your date might not want to call for a cab of her own.

Port: This dangerously delightful and deliciously decadent dessert wine is smooth and sensuous, but beware, it has a powerful kick if you’re not too careful! Port is fortified, meaning it has a much higher alcohol content and so it is normally imbibed from small glasses, in slow, savory sips. Port should be served at precisely 65 degrees if you are entertaining connoisseurs or warmer if you are looking for a nice, enticing way to warm up a cool autumn evening with a special friend who has sweets! Always drink it with the glass half full, in order to allow for proper aeration.
