Two Assamese Killed, 9 Injured in Train Attack

Guwahati, August 19: At least two Assamese youths were killed and 9 others injured, when they were attacked on a Guwahati bound train near New Jalpaiguri railway station in West Bengal on Saturday night, officials said on Sunday.

The incident took place in between the Balakuba and Raninagar stations on Saturday night around 8:50 pm, when a group of 50 members were attacked by an Assamese youth on a Guwahati bound train, which was traveling from Bangalore.

“One body was found on the railway tracks who was identified as Atikur Rahman Mazumdar, hailing from the Hailakandi District of Assam,” an official of the North East Frontier Railway (NFR) said.

The injured persons were rushed to Siliguri medical college hospital. 11 others are still missing after the incident.

A family member of one of the deceased said that all the Hailakandi youth were engaged as security guards in Bangalore and were returning to their homes for Eid-ul-Fitar.

Over 1800 young people of the north eastern region arrived at the Guwahati railway station on Sunday morning on two special trains from Bangalore.
