Supreme Court Issues Order on Lower Subansiri Hydro Project

The Supreme Court on Monday issued an order and asked the Power ministry, Forest and Environment ministry of Union government, National Hydro Power Corporation (NHPC) authority, Assam state government and Arunachal Pradesh state government to file an affidavit within two weeks on the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electric Project (LSHEP).

APW has filed a writ petition (case no- 359/2012) and disclosed to the apex body of the impact on the downstream and ecology of the area.

“We filed the petition and prayer to the apex body that the NHPC dam must release the minimum sustainance flow natural water of 450 cu3m/sec from LSHEP dam all through the year for ecological health of the river,” APW president Abhijit Sarma said.

Justice Swatanter Kumar and Justice SJ Mukhopdhya passed the directive to the government and NHPC after hearing the writ petition.

The work of the LSHEP was stopped since December 2011 after a massive protest against the construction of the big dam by several organizations including Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP).
