Srinagar, July 31: In the first incident of its kind, a pro-Indian woman politician Mehbooba Mufti was placed under house arrest.
“I had to visit Sopore in North Kashmir, where a youth died in police custody, but police locked the main entrance of my residence in Srinagar and didn’t allow anybody to move. This is a shameful act that even the opposition leader was being placed under house arrest. The government has turned Kashmir into a garrison,” Mehbooba said.
Police sources said a police officer alongwith a contingent of police including women constables cordoned off the residence of Mehbooba to prevent her from going to Sopore.
The keys of the main gate of her house were taken away by the police contingent.
A senior police official confirmed that the opposition leader was placed under house arrest.
This is the first time that a pro-Indian politician has been placed under house arrest in Kashmir, where restrictions are frequently imposed on the movement of separatist leaders.
