International Day Against Child Exploitation

Today is the International Day Against Child Exploitation. Activities to highlight the situation of exploited children are going on throughout the World and in Nepal.

CONCERN Nepal, and other NGOs organized a rally today against child exploitation in Kathmandu. The organization sends a warning all those who have been exploiting children sexually, mentally and physically in daily basis.

Bijaya SAINJU, Executive Chair of CONCERN-Nepal said today “It is sad to see and read news of a school boy who was kidnapped and murdered brutally. CONCERN-Nepal strongly condemns such clandestine activities of children exploiters. We have zero tolerance now and such inhumane people should be in jails.”

Global Child Exploitation

A global report shows that 40% of children under the age of 18 are being exploited by adults knowingly or unknowingly. For more than a decade, CONCERN has been raising the serious issue of child exploitation of children living and working in hazardous conditions in brick factories, stone quarries, carpet factories, restaurants, and portaging. Children are also exploited as mechanics, domestic workers, street hawkers, and more.

According to CONCERN-Nepal, children working in these sectors have been regularly under physical and sexual exploitation. About 10% of brick kilns (60,000), 7% of stone quarries (32,000), 12% of restaurants (71,000), 9% of carpet factories (7,000), 7% of child porters (46,000) and 11% of domestic workers (56,000) working throughout the country are in the worst exploitative situations.

Nepal’s Central Bureau of Statistics Labor Survey shows 34% of children aged 10 to 14 are economically active and working for their day to day survival.

CONCERN aims to attract the attention of governmental and nongovernmental organization, INGOs and UN Agencies and all concerned stakeholders to help immediately eradicate the exploitation of children in Nepal.

“Let us fight together against the inhumane activities of child exploiters.”
