Assam Disaster Management Team Formed For Nepal Quake

Since the massive earthquake in Nepal, the government of Assam has formed a special Disaster Management Team to assist affected Assamese people in Nepal.

The Disaster Management Team will coordinate with the authorities of the Indian Embassy, Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, National Disaster Response Force and the Government of Nepal. They will trace missing persons, assist the injured, evacuate dead bodies, and assist and avacuate stranded and injured persons.

As soon as the team was announced, on April 29, it immediately proceeded to Kathmandu, Nepal by road, taking with it the necessary personnel, vehicles, and medicines.

A high-level state government official detailed the team:

  • Debraj Upadhyaya, IPS, DCP (Admn), Commissionerate of Police, Guwahati,
  • Pranjit Bora, APS, 2 I/C, Commando BN, Mandakata,
  • Dr. Indrakalpa Hazarika, Senior Medical Officer, Panbazar Police Hospital,
  • Dr. Utpal Bora, Medical Officer, 4 APBN, Kahilipara,
  • Munindra Sarma, Nursing Havildar, Panbazar Police Hospital,
  • Gobinda Das, Nursing Havildar, Panbazar Police Hospital,
  • One unit of State Disaster Response Force, Assam
  • six drivers.

The same day the Disaster Management Team left for Nepal, the bodies of six Assamese women, who were killed during the earthquake in Nepal, arrived in Guwahati.

“The bodies reached Delhi from Kathmandu and were flown to Borjhar International airport in Guwahati. They were on pilgrimage to the Himalayan region,” the official said.

After the women’s bodies arrived at their respective homes, they were later cremated.

The victims were Kalpana Adhikari, Bhumika Das, Joysree Das, Rina Das, Bhanita Deka and Hema Saikia.

Other victims have yet to be recovered from Nepal.

Officials noted that at least 13 Assamese people are still missing in Nepal.

Assam police ADGP Umesh Kumar said 43 people of Assam are still stranded in Nepal and official have had contact with 20 of them.

Some people have arrived back from Nepal after being initially stranded there. On Wednesday, seven people, including a girl from Shillong in Meghalaya, arrived in Guwahati. Riya Singh, who was studying medical science in Kathmandu, arrived from Delhi.
