Assam Chief Minister Concerned About Insurgency Problem in North East

Guwahati, May 4 : On Monday, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi expressed his concern over insurgency in the North Eastern region of Assam, after a militant attack on Assam Rifles troops in Nagaland on Sunday afternoon around 2-30 pm.

The attack left eight Assam Rifles jawans dead, nine injured and four others were missing in the attack by UNLFW, United platform of NSCN-Khaplang, ULFA (I), KLO and NDFB.

Gogoi urged the union government to take serious action against the insurgency, which has increased in the past year.

“It is a serious issue where several militant groups in the region have organised more attacks on security forces. Union government has taken this issue seriously and take stern steps against the militants,” the Assam CM said during a press conference held in Guwahati on Monday.

At the same time, Gogoi accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of practicing narrow politics in his proposal to exclude Assam from the coverage of the Land Boundary Agreement ( LBA), popularly known as Land Swap Deal with Bangladesh.

Attacking PM Modi directly, Gogoi said the Prime Minister had changed his position before the poll to another position after the poll. He said the Union Government did not consult with the States before making changes in the LBA.

Congress has opposed the BJP proposed constitution amendment bill.

Responsibility for the attacks on the troops was taken by newly formed United National Liberation Front of Western South East Asia (UNLFW). The attack took place in the Mon district of Nagaland along the Myanmar border on Sunday.

The ULFA (I) group on Monday said the newly formed United platform of NSCN-Khaplang, ULFA (I), KLO and NDFB carried out the joint attack on Assam Rifles troopers in Changlangsu village in Mon district of Nagaland along Myanmar border on Sunday evening.

“The UNLFW was formed on April 17 under chairmanship of SS Khaplang, chairman of NSCN(K),” Arunodoy Asom, publicity secretary of ULFA (I) said in the statement.

NSCN-Khaplang recently cancelled the cease fire agreement with the Union government.

Nagaland DGP LL Doungel said that, the incident took place at the remote area when troopers were proceeding to their company camp from the Tobu area.

“A vehicle carrying the Assam Rifles personnel and a water tanker had gone to a nearby place to fetch water. When the vehicle reached Changlangsu area, a powerful Improvised Explosive Device (IED) was exploded and militants fired indiscriminately on the troopers,” the Nagaland DGP said.

The injured personnel were rushed to the local hospital.

After the attack, Nagaland DGP, police and army were sent to the area to launch an operation against the militants.
