Qadhafi’s Death Finally Closes Dark Chapter in Libya

U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Susan E. Rice today said Qadhafi’s death finally closes the dark chapter in Libya.

“Just weeks after ending a tyrant’s grip on power, the Libyan people have ensured the end of his continued claim to it. But the death of Col. Muammar Qadhafi after forty-two years of iron rule does not alone guarantee a safer, more democratic and prosperous Libya.” – Ms. Rice

Ms. Rice said the Libyan people will face great challenges in the days ahead. She highlighted that the United States will stand with them.

“We will be a full partner as Libya works to build an inclusive, transparent, democratic government and create new economic opportunities for its citizens.” -Ms. Rice

She stressed that we will support its efforts to uphold the rule of law, create essential new institutions, and protect the rights of all citizens, including women and minorities.

“We will support the international community in providing the expertise and technical assistance that Libyans will need to build a brighter future.” -Ms. Rice
