The Star of David, What it Represents

The Star of David is said to represent the shape of King David’s shield, used when the King fought a war. According to the Jewish belief system, the shield of King David symbolizes that no one wins just by one’s own might but by the will and protection of G-d.

Star of David Meaning

The Star of David symbolizes G-d’s rule over the universe in six different directions: North, South, East, West, Up and Down and thus it’s six point-shape.

In the Kabbalah (the ancient Jewish tradition of mystical interpretation of the Bible), the Star of David represents the dichotomy between good and evil, the spiritual world and the physical world, and G-d and the Jewish people.

The Zohar (The Zohar is the foundational work in the literature of Jewish mystical thought known as Kabbalah) teaches that the Jewish people connect to G-d through the study and observance of the Torah; David’s Star symbolizes this connection between G-d and the Jewish nation. The triangle pointing up symbolizes one’s good deeds, and the triangle pointing down demonstrates how one’s good deeds’ energy flow down back to earth. Additionally, just as there are 12 tribes of the nation of Israel, the Star of David has 12 sides.

By wearing a Star of David, a Jewish person can emphasize his or her connection to the Jewish nation, G-d and the Torah; express pride in the Jewish nation’s ancient history, dating back till ancient times. By wearing a Star of David artifact around one’s neck, a Jew can stress that he or she is part of an accomplished nation that invents, innovates, writes science and philosophy and thus serves as a true light onto the nations.

Why is The Star of David Important

David’s Star symbols

For many Jews, the best way to express their attachments to their ancient faith is to wear a Star of David necklace around one’s neck.

In 1897, the Star of David was adopted as the official symbol of the Zionist movement, the Jewish national liberation and sovereignty movement.

Today, the Star of David is the most common symbol for expressing one’s Jewish identity. It is proudly displayed on the Israeli flag, on all of Israel’s institutes’ buildings, on the balconies’ of apartments in Israel, on ambulances serving in the Jewish state, on menorahs, kippot – skullcaps and tallitot – the Jewish prayer wrapping cloth.

The Jewish people, one of the oldest nations on earth, has a rich and vibrant history, dating back to the times of the Forefather Avraham, as told in the Jewish Bible – ‘Old Testament.’ It was the Jewish people who established the principle of monotheism and who taught the Ten Commandments, humanity’s basic moral code, to the entire universe.

The Jews of antiquity taught God’s Command ‘thou shall not kill’ at a time when other ancient nations were burying their daughters alive, sacrificing their children to their idol gods and enjoying the sight of wild animals killing off people in stadiums, as a sport.

This Jewish commitment to morality and education has existed from ancient times and throughout the ages.

The Jews of medieval Spain were writing philosophy and contributing towards modern medicine at a time when Europeans were burning witches at the stake merely for practicing a so-called herbal medicine.

As ISIS, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, has been committing genocide against minority groups all over the Middle East and even beyond, destroying irreplaceable ancient artifacts, the Jewish people have continued to innovate and create for the world to revel. They invented a vaccine for Polio (poliomyelitis) cholera and SMS messaging technic, among many, many other inventions that have contributed immeasurably to humanity and the progress of the world, making the world a so much better place to live.

And the Jewish people, across the world, are proud of their fantastic, colorful, but not without much pain, history.

And the Star of David represents all the goodness imbued in the individual Jew, the Jewish people, as a whole, and the entire world.
