In the modern era, Ukraine has become a much more democratic country.

Kiev is engulfed by unrest when massive protest by pro-EU protesters stood their ground on Wednesday after an overnight sweep by riot police.

The authorities sent in battalions of riot police with bulldozers to reclaim the Independence Square. There were records of scuffles and arrests. However, the riot police avoided entering the nearby City Hall and by morning they withdrew from the streets.

In a press statement in Washington DC, US Secretary of State John Kerry condemned the destruction of a protest camp in central Kiev.

“This response is neither acceptable nor does it befit a democracy.” – Secretary Kerry

He also urged President Viktor Yanukovich to offer to meet opposition leaders to find a way out of a crisis.

The turmoil strated last month when the President Yanukovich yielded pressure from Moscow and spurned a free trade deal with the EU.

and their leaders dismissed an offer of talks from a president they say must quit for favoring ties with Russia over the European Union.

US: Ukraine citizens deserve better

Secretary Kerry also called on President Yanukovych and his government to listen to the voices of his people who want peace, justice and a European future.

“We call for utmost restraint. Human life must be protected. Ukrainian authorities bear full responsibility for the security of the Ukrainian people.” – Secretary Kerry

He added that as church bells ring tonight amidst the smoke in the streets of Kyiv, the United States stands with the people of Ukraine. He added they deserve better.

Citizens deeply outraged by government’s decision not to sign deal with EU

Massive protests have rocked the Ukrainian capital of Kiev over the government’s opposition not to sign a deal forging closer EU ties.

A huge rally triggered clashes between police and demonstrators in the city. Reports of violence are making headlines around the world as police used tear gas to counter demonstrators who were advancing on police lines and throwing large stones.

Hundreds of thousands of protesters have stormed the city to launch a huge rally.

Many Outraged By Current Government’s Decision

The protesters are demanding the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovych’s government and slammed the Administration’s decision not to sign a deal that would bring closer ties with the European Union.

Local media said the protests started two weeks ago after President Yanukovych delayed preparations on signing an EU tie agreement that would have opened borders to goods and easing of travel restrictions.

President Yanukovych argued that Ukraine could not afford to sacrifice trade with Russia, which greatly opposed the deal.
