Cyprus Celebrates Its Independence Day

The citizens of Republic of Cyprus today celebrated their independence day.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Cyprus.

“Our two countries have enjoyed a long history of cooperation. Recently, you demonstrated your commitment to this relationship by opening your borders to hundreds of Americans and others who were fleeing unrest in the middle east, providing a safe haven to those in need.” -Ms. Clinton

The city of Limassol is a major port and touristic hub in the Mediterranean.

Cyprus is the third largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. It is also the world’s 81st largest by area and world’s 49th largest by population, according to Wikipedia.

Ms. Clinton stressed that the United States supports Cyprus’ efforts to reach a comprehensive settlement to reunify the island as a bizonal, bicommunal federation. The United States believes that negotiations are essential, and it is urging all parties to intensify their work on behalf of peace and progress.

“As you celebrate this special day, know that the United States looks forward to strengthening the bonds of friendship between our two countries as we work to build a more peaceful and prosperous future for both our countries.” -Ms. Clinton
