The citizens of San Marino today celebrated their their national holiday, the Feast of San Marino.
San Marino is known to be the oldest surviving sovereign state and constitutional republic in the world, according to Wikipedia.
US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of San Marino on their national holiday, the Feast of San Marino.
Ms. Clinton said the Republic of San Marino is an inspiring example to the world. She highlighted that the citizens of San Marino have transcended centuries of political turmoil and today they are unwavering in their commitment to democracy and human rights. She stressed that around the world San Marino’s contributions to development and humanitarian assistance, and their continued partnership in international organizations, have impacted the lives of so many.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) persons in San Marino face legal challenges not experienced by non-LGBT residents. Both male and female same-sex sexual activity are legal in San Marino. However, the households headed by same-sex couples are not eligible for the same legal protections available to opposite-sex couples. In 1864, the total ban on homosexuality was abolished.
