Explosions Rock Brazzaville’s Munition Depot in Congo

A series of explosions rocked Congo’s Brazzaville at a munitions depot in the city.

The Sunday’s explosion reportedly killed 236 people and 1,340 people were injured.

Media reports say the explosions struck buildings, killing hundreds and trapping hndreds under debris. The blasts echoed across the Congo River to the capital of the neighboring Central African nation of Congo.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton today expressed deep sadness to learn of the loss of life and damage caused by Sunday’s explosions in Brazzaville.

Ms. Clinton reports that the U.S. Embassy in Brazzaville is in the process of issuing a disaster declaration that will allow the U.S. to provide emergency assistance and relief to help the victims of this tragedy.

The United States is working with the Government of the Republic of Congo and the international community to determine what additional assistance we can provide to the government and people of Congo.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all Congolese people during this difficult time.” -Ms. Clinton

Currently, international aid for the victims has arrived from France, Morocco and neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo.

Congo’s authorities blamed faulty electrical wiring for Sunday’s deadly explosions.

Brazzaville is the capital and largest city of the Republic of the Congo and is located on the Congo River.
