TOUM – An evening gathering in the garden of Sudan’s intelligence chief was the setting of a pretense, a show of support for counterterroism.
Nothing pleases a U. S. official more than to have a prominent official, in a foreign government, tell him what he wants to hear, especially if it occurs in an exciting exotic setting. Useful material for his fairy tale memoir, boys adventure stories. His main concern would be if another official had received more “leads” and therefore have a better selling book or more invitations on the talk show circuit.
Gen. Gosh was no doubt laughing at the American agent and his British counterpart as he was embracing them. While the gathering was at the end of a conference on international cooperation against terrorism Khartoum has perfect working relations with Tehran. As of this writing the General has probably given Tehran a full briefing on how he misled both Washington and London. They know the lies that work, all the anti-terrorism catch phrases. In the meantime Khartoum intends to reduce Western access to Sudan’s oil.
Support for this endeavor is coming directly from Tehran-Riyadh. Sudan is one of the four nations Iran’s then President Mohammad Khatami visited a year ago in which he addressed Sudan’s government and discussed economic opportunity in the region, opportunity Iran assumes the Islamic world will monopolize. Tehran wants Khartoum to be successful against any opposition, in or out of the country, and misleading Washington/London will also serve that purpose.
