Citizens of Gabonese Republic Celebrate Their Independence Day

The citizens of Gabonese Republic today celebrated their 51 years of independence.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Gabonese Republic on their National Day.

Gabon is known for its efforts to preserve the natural environment. President Omar Bongo Ondimba put Gabon firmly on the map as an important future ecotourism destination in 2002. The President by designate more than 11% of the nation’s territory to be part of its national park system with 13 parks in total, one of the largest proportions of nature parkland in the world. Natural resources include: petroleum, magnesium, iron, gold, uranium, and forests, according to Wikipedia.

“Your government has demonstrated a strong commitment to transparency and efficiency. Your history as a leader in environmental stewardship is setting an example for the region, and the United States is committed to working with you as you continue to curb the effects of global warming, fight wildlife poaching, promote sustainable forest management and protect your country’s rich biodiversity.” -Ms. Clinton

She highlighted that the United States looks forward to building on their history of friendship and cooperation as they work toward common goals in the region and around the world.

“With legislative elections and the African Cup of Nations coming this year, this is an exciting time of challenge and opportunity for the people of Gabon. Congratulations on this special day and best wishes for continued peace and prosperity in the year to come.” -Ms. Clinton

Gabon’s economy is highly dominated by oil in which oil revenues comprise roughly 46% of the government’s budget, 43% of gross domestic product (GDP), and 81% of exports.
