A massive floodings and deadly landslides have left at least 50 killed in Burundi’s capital as storm hit the central African country.
The storm swept away homes and cut off roads and power. Scores of people were also injured.
The torrential rains caused flooding, mudslides and landslides, destroying houses, roads and other infrastructure.
The local authority has identified about 50 bodies and at present rescuers are still looking for missing victims.
To respond to the medical needs of the victims, the government announced for free hospital treatment.
A temporary relocation and tent sites were build for those who lost their homes.
In addition, the government declared two days of national mourning.
U.S. Extends Condolences to Burundi Flood and Landslide Victims
In a press statement in Washington DC, US Deputy Department Spokesperson Marie Harf said the United States extends its deepest condolences to the Government and the people of Burundi on the tragic loss of life and property in Bujumbura following the heavy rains that led to significant flooding and landslides.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families at this very difficult time.” – Ms. Harf
Burundi is a landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of Southeast Africa. It is also considered part of Central Africa. Burundi’s capital is Bujumbura.
