Algeria Celebrates National Day

Algeria celebrated its National Day on July 5th, just one day after the US celebrated Independence Day.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Algeria on their National Day.

A member of the Arab League, the United Nations, and the African Union, Algeria will be the largest country in Africa, after 9 July, after Southern Sudan secedes from Sudan.

Secretary Clinton said the United States and Algeria have a long history of partnering to promote security and stability in the Middle East and North Africa.

The Algerian Government has already initiated comprehensive reforms to address the democratic and economic aspirations of Algerians.

Just a few months ago, on 24 February, the government lifted its 19-year-old state of emergency, avoiding the kind of popular uprising and protest seen in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya.

The United States is committed to this relationship. As you work to improve democratic institutions and expand opportunity, know that the United States is your partner and friend as we work together for a brighter future.

– US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton
