Law & Order: Criminal Intent S5 DVD Review

In New York City’s war on crime, the worst criminal offenders are pursured by the detectives of the Major Crime Squad. These are their stories.

Law & Order: Criminal Intent became a brand-new show in its fifth season with the joining of L&O favorite Chris Noth (Sex & the City, The Good Wife), whose Detective Mike Logan returns to the streets of Manhattan after a 10-year exile in Staten Island as part of the Major Case team. His comeback episode, season four’s “Stress Position”, gave the series its highest ratings against ABC’s then-freshman smash Desperate Housewives at the time.

He is partnered with Carolyn Barek (Annabella Sciorra), as they alternate with Detectives Goren (Vincent D’Onoforio) and Eames (Kathryn Erbe) in all 22 season five episodes, as they go after the mob and corrupt cops, tangled with Goren’s nemesis Nicole Wallace, and worked together in the two-part “In the Wee Small Hours”, where the case of a missing girl leads to a judge and his son.

Season five is the last for Sciorra, Courtney Vance’s ADA Ron Carver and Jamey Sheridan’s Major Case Captain James Deakins.

Sadly, there are no features or extras on DVD such as a featurette on bringing the character Logan to CI as well as the difference between him and Goren in terms of personalities and style.

Though the formula remains the same, this season is an improvement with the arrival of Noth, whose reprisal as Logan helped keep CI fresh over the next three years.

Season five of Law & Order: Criminal Intent is now available on DVD.
