Tips on Maintaining Your Car to Improve Your Driving

Even if you’re a great driver, it can be difficult to be safe on the road when your car is in turmoil. Even the newest cars need to be maintained and cared-for in order for them to be safe to drive. Getting into an accident because of a poorly-maintained vehicle can result in the need to hire a local Atlanta Car Accident Lawyer and go to court for a personal injury lawsuit.

Tires and Brakes

Two of the most important parts of a car when it concerns its safety are the tires and brakes. If your tires are balding, this eliminates the amount of traction they have on the road. This is only made worse if you’re driving in the rain or snow and are depending on that traction. It’s recommended that you change your tires every 5,000 miles or when you notice they are beginning to look worn. Your brakes also need to be changed regularly to prevent issues with stopping the vehicle. If you can hear your brakes squealing when you stop the car, this is a sign that they need to be changed.

Oil Changes

The oil in your car is responsible for keeping the vehicle running to the best of its ability. When you give your car a regular oil change, it allows your gas to work more efficiently and saves you a lot of money. You’ll also find that dirty sludge-like oil can clog up the internal workings of the car, resulting in the need to have more work done just to get your car repaired. It’s advised by professionals to have your oil changed every 3,000 miles.

Wiper Blades and Windows

You may not even think about your wiper blades until you actually need to use them. In some cases, going with a cheaper brand of blades isn’t necessarily a good thing as they don’t last long and don’t work as well to clear debris and dirt from the windows. You need good quality wiper blades to be safe on the road, especially if you’re going to be driving in the rain or snow. You should also make it a habit to keep your windows clean and clear. Whether you get window cleaning fluid and wipe the windows at home or use the window washing brush at the gas station, it’s critical that you have a clear view of the road.

Lights and Signals

It can be devastating to be driving at night and realize that your headlights are out. You can also get a pretty hefty ticket for not having a light working on your car. This involves both the headlights as well as the tail lights and signal lights. It’s easy to check to see if these lights are working. Just turn them on and get out of your car to ensure that they’re flashing or lit up. If you notice that a light is out, you can either change this yourself or go to a local mechanic shop to have it done quickly.

Inspections

In most states, you’ll need to bring your car to an inspection station each year to have it checked for safety and quality. If your car continually fails inspection, it might be time to consider getting a new vehicle to save yourself the headache. You also need to make sure that you don’t ride around with an expired inspection sticker, as this can result in a ticket and fine that will prevent you from driving that vehicle altogether.
