Surfing with an Edge Costa Rican Style

A gem amongst bountiful beauty is Dominical. Situated where the mountains meet the sea in southern Costa Rica along the Pacific coast, is the small however infamous, village of Dominical.

Famous through surf circles, Dominical is notorious for having consistently great surf. For years this small seaside village has succeeded in quietly existing on many avid surfers “secret spot” destinations however these days, the proverbial cat might be out of the bag.

As Costa Rica emerges on the other side of one of the worst rainy seasons on record, there has been upsides.

In the month of November there was a 96 hour period where nine feet of torrential rains occurred in the Southern Zone of the country. As it would be, this would forever change the landscape of Dominical.

Dominical, once known for its beach break, now offers up something a little more intriguing. With the sheer amount of rainfall in the area, the river Baru that runs alongside the village, dumped massive amounts of sediment in to the delta (river mouth) and formed a natural crescent shaped sand bar. With the addition of this new landscape characteristic, Dominical now has both a left and right break being thrown off the sand bar for surfers to enjoy. Combining that with the slightly larger swells at the river mouth and you’ve got some impressive surf conditions. The excitement was palatable.

As we enter the high season in Costa Rica, Dominical begins to prepare itself for the enormous influx of tourism traffic and surfers to descend on the tiny village through the following months.
