Weinberg Foundation Donates $1 Million to Victims of Sandy

$1 Million Donation to Help Hurricane Sandy Victims

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation announced today that it will contribute up to $1 million to help ongoing relief initiatives in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

After talking to organizations on the front lines of the recovery attempt, the Weinberg Foundation is awarding several distinct grants to a number of diverse organizations operating directly with hurricane victims. Collectively these funds will offer immediate and continuous help to countless numbers in need.

Help for Non-Fema Qualified Projects

The grants include $100,000 to the Archdiocese of New York to aid initiatives in order to take care of mentally ill evacuees and frail aged adults, who have been made homeless by the hurricane, and need housing and material support. And $250,000 will go to Robin Hood Foundation for distribution among nonprofits doing work in the tri-state area; $250,000 to the UJA Federation of New York for distribution of short-term emergency funds and longer-term budget help for non-FEMA qualified projects.

Also, $250,000 will go to the Jewish Federations of North America for distribution in New Jersey and Connecticut of immediate emergency funds and longer-term capital support intended for non-FEMA but qualified projects, and $150,000 for added needs as they are recognized.

Weinberg Foundation a Long and Proud History

“The Weinberg Foundation has a long and proud history of responding to emergency needs both in the United States and around the world including Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the December 2006 tsunami in Indonesia, and the Haiti earthquake in 2010,” said Rachel Garbow Monroe, the Foundation’s President. “The Foundation’s funding approach includes supporting multiple partners who collectively will reach thousands of families and individuals whose lives have been turned upside down by this devastating storm. These funds will help address acute, basic needs, as well as long-term, systemic issues including housing, employment, and health. In these ways, Weinberg Foundation support of Hurricane Sandy relief efforts will mirror the Foundation’s core mission and grant making goals.”

Attempts dedicated to the New York metropolitan area are not a new undertaking for the Foundation. Throughout the last three fiscal years, the Weinberg Foundation has managed more than 60 grants amassing over $29 million to non-profits giving direct service to deprived and susceptible masses through the entire region.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation is one of the largest private charitable foundations in the United States. It provides around $100 million in annual grants to nonprofits that offer immediate services to economically disadvantaged people, primarily in the U.S. and Israel.
