The United States of America today commemorated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People.
U.S. Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Susan E. Rice today said the United States is proud to commemorate the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People.
“Just eight months ago, President Obama announced the support of the United States for the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. On this day, we celebrate the aspirations of the Declaration and recognize its moral and political force.” -Ms. Rice
Ms. Rice highlighted that in announcing the U.S. decision in December, President Obama stressed that what matters more than “any resolution or declaration…are actions to match those words.”
She stressed that the United States is working steadfastly within the framework of its laws and Constitution to foster real change in Native communities-from investing in high-speed broadband infrastructure to expanding access to health care to strengthening public safety.
“As we celebrate the rich heritage and contributions of indigenous people, the United States renews our commitment to achieving a brighter future for Native Americans and calls upon all nations to work together with indigenous communities to meet our common challenges.” -Ms. Rice
