Deadly Diseases Kill 314 in Assam

Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) have continued to wreak havoc in Assam, claiming 314 lives.

According to state health department reports, Japanese Encephalitis claimed 97 lives in 24 districts of the state so far.

“Vector-borne Acute Encephalitis Syndrome alone claimed 217 lives in the state,” a top state health department official said.

The health department reported that a total of 1808 people suffered from JE and AES so far.

24 districts out of 27 districts of the state have been hit badly with the two deadly diseases.

A total of 507 persons were confirmed inflicted with JE across the state.

In the worst hit districts, 36 persons lost their lives alone in Sivsagar district.

Apart from Sivsagar, JE and AES claimed 32 lives in Darrang district, 32 in Barpeta, 21 in Sonitpur, 25 in Dhemaji, 16 in Kamrup (Rural), 13 in Nagaon, 13 in Tinsukia, 20 in Dibrugarh, 12 in Lakhimpur, 12 in Baska, 11 in Golaghat, 10 in Jorhat, 8 in Chirang, 8 in Kokrajhar, 7 in Nalbari, 6 in Morigaon, 6 in Udalguri, 6 in Goalpara, 5 in Dhubri, 4 in Bongaigaon, 5 in Karbi Anglong district in the state.

To address the scourge of disease, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has instructed the health department to take immediate preventive measures across the state.
