Speck and Spark were the smallest, most elemental representatives of their kind in the unseen infinitesimal universe. Speck was an indivisible sub-atomic particle that had mass, and Spark was an electron without mass. Both of them behaved according to the rules and laws that governed their unique species of sub-atomic particles. Yet they were dance partners. Each of them knew how to perform all the dance routines that they had been created to perform. Of course no human knew how they managed to act when they had no brain, no sensors, no muscles, and not even one neuron.
Each knew where he or she was, what they could do, where they could go, and with whom it was permitted to associate. Likewise they both knew where they couldn’t go, what they couldn’t do, and with whom association was prohibited. Those few unique abilities made it possible for each one to carry out the purpose they were designed to fulfill anywhere in this immense universe.
Now human scientists believe that there are four forces that move objects or restrain them. These forces are not seen either. So, if you believed in this theory, you must accept that each force knows what it is, what it can do, the size of its so-called force field, and what basic elements are subject to its irresistible power. Now that theory assumes that a force is as intelligent as Speck and Spark because it has neither mass nor energy, no neurons and no brain, no muscles and no visible way to communicate with the objects that must respond the influence of its power.
However, the four forces and all the objects in the universe like Speck and Spark obey the Laws of Nature as if they knew each one and were without the capacity to disobey any of them. How is that possible to coordinate the activity of these three unique participants without some communication? After pondering how humans manage to coordinate simple activities, I came to the conclusion that there must be some form of communication yet to be defined that works like a radio transmitter and receiver.
Or like the music played at a dance. Two partners, call them Speculator and Sparky, know how to listen for and pay attention to the music being played. They recognize the melody, the three beat structure of a waltz measure, the eight measure phrasing, the customary rhythm, and the resolving chord that signals the end of the song. Not one word needs to be spoken if the couple dancing is familiar with how to dance to a waltz. Via the music alone, much information is conveyed that permits the two dancers to display on the dance floor what is expected from a couple who are dancing to waltz music.
Of course, that analogy is not perfect because human dancers have brains that process all the musical clues. Nevertheless, Speck and Spark can perform their interactive roles with minimum directions. All they need is the “music” or some way of being apprised of what the next instant of time is going to unfold – the next beat in the measure, so to speak – if there is a change from what they are experiencing at that moment that would require them to do something different.
Don’t ask me how that essential communication is provided to Speck and Spark. Or how a force is instructed about its role in the universe and consequently responds appropriately. Humans observe this complicated sub-atomic dance, but only the choreographer knows what is to happen next, and only the composer knows how the music ends.
