While I have great respect for religion, I can’t help but despise those who take it a little too far.
Haiti has just been dealt a serious blow with this earthquake. Thousands have perished, their already fragile infrastructure has been paralyzed, and millions have found themselves homeless. It is a tragic catastrophe; a somber reflection of the capricious nature of Nature.
One man, however, doesn’t find it to be so capricious.
Televangelist Pat Robertson, known for some of his more outrageous claims such as “prayer can deflect hurricanes,” “Hinduism is demonic” and “Islam is Satanic” recently stated that Haiti’s freedom from France came as a result of a deal with the Devil. In an interview with the 700 Club, he said: “They were under the heel of the French…and they got together and swore a pact to the devil. They said, ‘We will serve you if you’ll get us free from the French.” He rambled on: “True story. And so the devil said, ‘OK, it’s a deal.’ They kicked the French out. The Haitians revolted and got themselves free. Ever since, they have been cursed by one thing after the other.”
Way to suck all of the humanity out of this tragedy. Claiming that a random act of Nature was a result of a deal with the Devil? This is almost as bad as his suggestion that some of the denominations of the Protestant faith harbor Antichrist ideals. Almost as bad as his prediction of the world coming to an end in 1982. Almost as bad as his prediction of a tsunami hitting the Pacific Northwest in 2006. Almost as bad as his prediction of a terrorist attack in 2007. There are two common denominators here: One, all of these predictions were found to be nothing more than shortsighted claims from a delusional human being. The second is that all of these predictions and suggestions were claimed to have come from things God told him.
With all that said, how does this man even have a constituency of listeners anymore? Nobody has stopped to say that maybe he’s just a deluded old man? I think the outcry that came from his statement about Haiti proves that he needs to retreat to the shadows and keep his prophecies and accusations to himself. However, I’m sure there’s the few who agree and keep his radical blood flowing.
What about Katrina? 9/11? Were those horrifying tragedies Satan’s work as well? No! Don’t be relieved so soon, readers. According to him, Katrina was a result of God’s wrath towards abortion. 9/11 was the fault of gay rights groups and civil libertarians. GAY RIGHTS GROUPS. Of course, the terrorists are so upset with America because we have gay citizens! Maybe that’s why gay marriage isn’t allowed – that may just be the straw that breaks the camel’s back for those extremists.
He also said that Ariel Sharon’s stroke was a result of Israel giving up its land to the Palestinians – as if anyone with a functioning mind needs any more proof of his utter ineptitude
And now, we come to this latest statement of complete and utter ignorance. If he wants to be consistent, he needs to conjure up a divine excuse for every natural disaster that claims lives and property. Tornadoes, floods, blizzards, hailstorms, everything. He obviously doesn’t realize how bizarre and unbelievable some of the things he says are. He also doesn’t seem to have much regard for the true tragic nature of these disasters – but maybe someday, in his dwindling lifetime, one of his predictions will come true.
And he can tell us all “I told you so.”
