Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: Possible Lesson for Dialogue With Cuba

There have been rumours that Cuba has offered assistance to aid in the cleanup of the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean.

Not true, according to the State Department. A US State Department spokesman said today, “The Department is not aware of any offer of assistance extended by the Government of Cuba.”

Relations between the US and Cuba have not thawed, despite President Obama’s talk about talking to other nations, including enemies.

Many pundits have been urging a need for dialogue with Cuba, especially now that Cuba could be preparing to begin it’s own undersea drilling. If that is the case, there is the possibility of a future oil spill inside Cuban waters. If there was such a spill, they question how the US would proceed to protect it’s resources that would undoubtedly be threatened, if Cuba and their partners were unable to stem the flow.

If there was no cooperation between the countries, given existing accusations of slow presidential response, cynics say it might just depend on the closeness of an election and the need for a President to be seen as an action figure.
