Babe Ruth
Babe Ruth was an American professional Major League Baseball player. Babe was born George Herman Ruth Jr on February 6, 1895. he played 22 seasons, from 1914 through 1935. His nicknames included “The Bambino” and “The Sultan of Swat.” He was a left-handed pitcher, and his first team was the Boston Red Sox, but his greatest fame came when he played for the New York Yankees as a slugging outfielder.
Considered one of America’s greatest sports heroes, some of Babe’s records still stand. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936, one of the first five.
He established many batting and pitching records, including 714 career home runs, runs batted in (RBIs) (2,213), bases on balls (2,062), slugging percentage (.690), and on-base plus slugging (OPS) (1.164). These last two stand today.
In 1914, he signed with the Baltimore Orioles to play in the minor-league, but they quickly sold him to the Boston Red Sox. After successful seasons, at the end of the 1919 season, the Red Sox sold him to the New York Yankees, where he remained for 15 years. He was sold for $1000,000, the most money ever paid for a player up to that time. In 1935, he moved to the Atlanta Braves and retired in May that year.
In 1927, Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs, beating his own single-season record. That record stood until 1961, when Roger Maris broke it by hitting 61.
