EPA Seeks Out Votes for Carson Contest

The U.S. EPA Aging Initiative, in league with Generations United and the Rachel Carson Council Inc., is asking the people for their votes of popular submissions for the Second Annual Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder Intergenerational Poetry, Essay and Photography Contest.

“Through this contest”, EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson, “we are encouraging the youngest and oldest among us to recognize wonders and beauty of the natural world.”

The event reflects Carson’s abilities as a writer to get adults to have with children a sense of wonder about nature in order to help them uncover its joys. Because of her breakthrough book Silent Spring, Carson has been called the creator of the modern-day environmental movement.

By naming the contest after her next book, the contest seeks work “that best express the ‘Sense of Wonder’ that you feel when observing the sea, the night sky, forests, birds, wildlife, and all that is all beautiful in your eyes.”

“This contest”, comments Generations United executive producer Donna Butts, “is a wonderful tool for connecting people across generations using an intergenerational approach to think about and dream about the world around. We’re proud to co-sponsor such a unique program in honor of an American heroine.”

Voting lasts until September 15 and winners will be revealed in October.
