A man accused of killing a series of his girlfriend’s cats has pleaded guilty to charges of animal cruelty in a Manhattan court.
36-year-old Sean Lynde said little during his hearing; however, State Supreme Court Justice Michael Obus adjourned his case with only a light sentence which, understandably, received many comments of outrage from the public.
Lynde was initially charged with killing five cats and torturing a sixth, but in court he only admitted to killing one of the five which were found dead in the apartment that he shared with his ex-girlfriend.
During the hearing, it was disclosed that three days after he moved into the apartment the first cat was found dead behind a clothes dryer with a mouth full of laundry detergent, head trauma and a broken jaw, according to animal welfare authorities. They also found that four more cats died of traumatic injuries over the next four months.
The judge ruled that Lynde will not need to spend any time in jail as long as he attends weekly therapy sessions and agrees to stay away from his now ex-girlfriend. If he was convicted, he could have faced up to two years in prison.
