J.J. Abrams is Back At Warp Speed to Direct ‘Star Trek 2’

Scotty has beam up J.J. Abrams, who is returning to the final frontier to direct Star Trek 2, with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci once again penning the script, along with producer Damon Lindelof.

As you may or may not know, these men work together on the cult shows Felicity, Alias, Lost, and Fringe — all created by Abrams.

Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto will reprise the covet roles of James T. Kirk and Spock. The 2009 original went boldly go where Star Trek has never gone before: rebooting and resurrecting the franchise. Set during the early years of Kirk, Spock, and the USS Enterprise crew, the film was a critical and commercial blockbuster, engaging in $385 million dollars worldwide, winning an Academy Award for Best Makeup, a first in Trek history.

Created by the late Gene Roddenberry, who called his series “Wagon Train to the stars”, the original Star Trek premiered on NBC on September 8, 1966. Though not a ratings success during its three-year run, it found an audience thanks to reruns in syndication, and Trekkies were born. The next 45 years came four shows (The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise) and eleven movies.

Star Trek 2 was originally scheduled to come out next June, but that date could be pushed back.

Meanwhile, catch Abrams’ new show Person of Interest, which premieres September 22 at 9p on CBS.
