New 3rd Edition of ‘Please Explain Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy to Me’ Educates Caregivers

Dr. Laurie Zelinger has been doing a great educational service benefiting children and parents via her series of books on explaining Tonsillectomy & Adenoidectomy to parents and their children. The third edition in this series, written with her son Perry Zelinger, who is a physician, is titled Please Explain Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy to Me: A Complete Guide to Preparing Your Child for Surgery, and has just been published by the Loving Healing Press of Ann Arbor, MI.

Tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy

Aiming to serve as a complete guide to preparing one’s child for surgery, this edition explains to parents the facts about tonsils and adenoids in simple, reassuring terms. The book also teaches parents how to best support their children through the medical and emotional events involved in the surgery. Thus, Dr. Zelinger helps prepare parents to prepare themselves and their children who need to go through tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.

The incidence of tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy is notably high and cannot be ignored. Nearly half a million children in the United States go through these surgeries in a given year.

“Tonsillectomies and adenoidectomies are often performed at the same time in a procedure called adenotonsillectomy,” tells Dr. Zelinger. “Tonsillitis tends to peak in children between the ages of 4 and 7, but since the size of tonsils and adenoids tends to shrink after age 9, surgical removal is seldom seen in children over age 15.”

The newest book on this topic incorporates current medical research and statistics as recent as 2018, discussion about obstructive sleep apnea, and the types of behavioral problems that may result from this condition, definitions of tonsillotomy vs. tonsillectomy, more information about the role of adenoids, a condensed Timeline Review, explicit information about how to recognize and handle complications, and new diagrams and illustrations. The newest edition has more detail and has been described as a “soup to nuts approach” to understanding the process from emotional and medical standpoints.

The 3rd Edition of Please Explain Tonsillectomy is the first one in this series to be offered in audiobook as well as paperback, hardcover, and eBook formats.
